Styling Our Curio Cabinet in the Breakfast Room

We’ve been slowly filling out our breakfast room — the room in our home that looks out onto the courtyard —and it’s quickly becoming our favorite place in the house. It has so many windows and the chairs are so plush and it just feels like a little paradise, a great place to start our days.

This past month we received our Bucro Curio Cabinet from Lulu and Georgia and have finally stopped blushing long enough to write a blog post about how we’re styling it! In our book Housewarming: a Guide to Creating a Home You Adore, we have a whole big chapter on styling different surfaces around your home, and while we don’t specifically discuss hutches or cabinets, we do give instructions on styling bookshelves, which can be applied here as well.

We typically style from the bottom to top, with the bottom being items that are bulkier or more utilitarian, and the very top being your most decorative items that help set the tone of a room. We do this for two reasons —one, the bottom shelves are often easiest for people of all heights to reach, and therefore it makes sense to keep the most used items here, and two, because the top shelves are closer to eye level or above, meaning your line of sight will be directed to them.

For our Curio Cabinet, we styled the bottom two shelves with our favorite 12-person dining set from Matt’s mother and an accompanying set of dining linens. Working our way up, the middle shelves have our favorite cooking and bar books, and one of our favorite large format scented candle that can fill the room within an hour of being lit (Slow Burn from Boysmells). Above that, on the top shelves, we keep vases, small platforms, and pillar candles—anything we might grab before having people over, or just leave in the hutch to look nice and cute. This would also be a great place for any small pieces of framed art, figurines, or other petite decorative objects.

We’re so happy with how the space is looking and are planning on doing a full room reveal very very soon, so sleep with one eye shut, or keep your eyes peeled, or whatever the saying is. For now you can find the full list of items used in our cabinet below :)

Love you, mean it.

  • Bucro Curio Cabinet | We love the simple but eye-catching shape of this piece and the combination of the medium-tone wood stain with black metal. The inset handles make this piece feel modern and luxe, while its classic arch shape make it timeless. A piece we’ll have for many years to come.

  • Slow Burn Magnum Candle | The magnum candles from Boysmells are a favorite of ours because they so quickly make an entire home smell incredible. The extra large size provides approximately 110-hours of burn time, meaning they last us quite a while. Slow Burn has smoky, amber, and rich fruit scent notes which makes for an immaculately cozy vibe.

  • Stoneware Vase | We love a quirky vase and mama? This vase is quirky. The earth tones in combination with the unique ribbing give it a beautiful appearance that can stand alone, but is also deep enough to hold your farmers market flower haul.

  • Wine Simple | One of our favorite books on wine and a huge inspiration behind the big ol’ wine section in Housewarming. Wine is obviously such a massive topic and this book, well, makes it simple!

  • Near & Far | Stunning recipes from around the world, focusing on delectable vegetarian dishes. We sometimes struggle to eat a varied diet especially with our veggies, so having this book on deck is a huge help for inspo!
