New Orleans home primary closet makeover

Plans and install were done by local custom closet company, Bayou Closets. They are LGBTQ+ owned and serve the New Orleans metro area! We were so happy to find them and thought the price point was fantastic.

Two years ago we renovated the upstairs of our home to be one big primary suite. We struggled with the orientation of the bedroom, bathroom, and closet as we wanted each space to get natural light, and there were only so many ways to achieve that while allowing for a layout and flow that made functional sense! The walk-in closet floor plan ultimately came down to a tough decision: we could have it be pretty large but with no natural light, or give it natural light but make it tiny. We went with the former, meaning we would be expanding the bedroom into part of the attic. We considered doing skylights but after a few contractors gave us the “skylights in a century old New Orleans home always end up being an issue” look, we let that dream go. Still, given that most old homes around here don’t have a closet at all, it felt like a win.

We didn’t budget for a professional closet installation when we first did the bedroom renovation, so for the past two years it’s just been painted subfloors, shelves, and makeshift rods Matt installed. It wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t super inspiring, functional, or nice to look at either. We finally got around to having a closet installer take a look and knock the work out in just one week. We installed vinyl flooring to match our original wood flooring and it looks way better—and much more similar to the rest of the bedroom’s wood flooring—than we’d expected.

We added some minimal decor and did a little brainstorming about how to organize the racks and drawers and now we’ve got a fully functional walk in closet that we love. It’s nothing terribly fancy, but it’s perfect-for-us and a massive improvement from where we were just a few months ago. Below we’ve got a few of our favorite functional decor items as well as more photos from around the space!

1.) Uashmama Modular Snap & Separate Laundry Bags $89 | We’ve had these snap laundry bags for years and love the organic feel they add to our closet, and how durable they are!

2.) Mushroom Storage Stools $149 | We’re suckers for anything that is multi-functional, like these adorable stools that also help store blankets, linens, and more.

3.) Topline Natural Wooden Suit Hangers Pack of 30 $25 | We’ve used these wooden hangers for years. They’re classic and long lasting, and the uniform look they add to the closet is wonderful.
